INTENTION EXERCISE **WARNING: Folks with a history of mental illness, trauma, or panic are urged not to use this exercise without without a therapist. If you decide to do these processes you will agree to absolve the webmasters, the servers, Emoclear.com, and Steve Mensing of any responsibility for the application or misapplication of these exercise. There is always in any process the possibility that someone could experience some discomfort. So proceed with this warning.** (c) Steve Mensing INTENTION Based on a conscious choice, intention is the active preference and commitment to do something. Examples: "I strongly desire to master emotional processing." or "I intend to fully feel my feelings and allow them to be there--I will neither try to get rid of them or keep them." In time these intentions will submerge themselves in the unconscious. When an intention is completely installed at the gut level it becomes an attitude in the background that runs the show. It is truly the "power behind the throne". It resides in the unconscious to be effective. It remains out of everyday consciousness unless we draw our attention to it. Intention gets everything moving--it is the key being inserted in the ignition. As we can imagine it is extremely important that we have control over these committed preferences. They run our life. Having strong intentions will decide whether or not we have a pleasurable and meaningful life. Intentions are the governing force behind our will. With control of our intentions we have our hands firmly on the steering wheel of our lives. Weak intentions are of little service and may help to create challenges for us both behaviorally and emotionally. Good and strong intentions empower our lives. They are the very basis of emotional integration and healing. What we strongly intend pushes the ball up the court. Poor intentions create emotional challenges and negative feedback from others and the environment. Our lives unfold through our intentions. Our behavior is dictated by our strongest unconscious intentions. If you post on this page it will have been your intention that got those keys struck. However you may not have been aware of your intentions. They are just in the background of awareness. We can have an enormous effect on our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations as well as our health with strong and focused intentions dwelling at the gut level. Having strong intentions is key in most areas of our lives. KNOW YOUR INTENTIONS EXERCISE Allow yourself to become relaxed while you do this exerice. Utilize left nasal dominance breathing: Here you simply breathe though your left nostril by gently pinching your right nostril closed. Breathe this way for at least the first few minutes of discovering your unconscious intentions. What are your most important values? Jot them down and see what your unconscious intentions are in this area. Write down your intentions. Be clear and specific. Core values might occur in these areas: Health, survival, personal growth, spirituality, basic needs, hobbies, major interests, family life, ect. These reside in our depths. Also take a look at your long-range and short-range goals. These can be clues to your intentions. List the intentions you have around your goals. List your most important intentions. Are there any intentions you do not want? List them. What feels like your most important intentions? Are your intentions positive and life affirming? If not--list those for potential integration. Are there any intentions you wish to make stronger by having less conflict with other intentions? With your weak intentions, list any doubts, counter intentions, negative feelings, and "yes buts" that come up. These will be targets for integration. CHANGE AND CREATE YOUR INTENTIONS EXERCISE Here is a model for stating intentions: I strongly prefer or desire to ___________________. If you experienced any counter intentions, yes buts, doubts, or negative feelings around your intentions and want to integrate them, simply use any Emoclear integrator to trim around your intention. Keep stating your positive intention with conviction and integrate any of those doubts, counter intentions, yes buts, or negative feelings until you are left with a very powerful intention. This will shortly fall away from your awareness and inhabit the world of your unconscious. You will know it though a felt sense. Ask yourself these questions to further test your unconscious intention: (1) Does my intention feel believable? (2) Is it strongly felt with no competing feelings or intentions. (3) Does it lead to a deeper sense of enhanced living? (4) Does this intention support my deepest preferences and cherished values? (5) Does this intention have a basic sense of goodness? If the intention fails these tests, either replace it or do a preferred process to change it and try again until you have a strong, positive, and believable intention. These will gradually be integrated into your nature and fall away from your awareness. You will experience their guiding force at the gut level. Have fun. Steve

RPreis asks: "What exactly is an intention and how do we locate our own? Is there something we can do to strengthen intentions?" RPreis, an intention is generally a conscious choice or active preference and commitment to do something. Examples: "I strongly desire to master emotional processing." or "I intend to fully feel my feelings and allow them to be there--I will neither try to get rid of them or keep them." In time and through habituation intentions will become unconscious. To locate an intention, recall an event using all your senses. Ask yourself: "What did I want to happen?" Your answer is your intention. There's more about intentions and how to strengthen them in the Intention Exercise below. Hi,
If you want to know about intentions this is clear description. It comes before the main body of the exercise. INTENTION Based on a conscious choice, intention is the active preference and commitment to do something. KNOW YOUR INTENTIONS EXERCISE
Become relaxed while you do this exerice. Utilize left nasal dominance breathing: Here you breathe though your left nostril by gently pinching your right nostril closed. Breathe this way for at least the first few minutes of discovering your unconscious intentions. What are your most important values? Write them down and see what your unconscious intentions are in this area. Write down your intentions. Be clear and specific. Core values might occur in these areas: Health, survival, personal growth, spirituality, basic needs, hobbies, major interests, family life, and so forth. These reside slightly out of your awareness. Hi,
CHANGE AND CREATE YOUR INTENTIONS EXERCISE Here is a model for stating intentions: I strongly prefer or desire to ___________________. If you notice any counter intentions, yes buts, doubts, or negative feelings toward your intentions and want to integrate them, simply use any Emoclear integrator to remove their emotional charge and deflate them. Keep stating your positive intention with conviction and integrate any of those doubts, counter intentions, yes buts, or negative feelings until you are left with a very powerful intention. This intention will soon fall away from your awareness and inhabit the world of your unconscious. You will know it though a felt sense. Bettina Kohler |

In the final part of the Intention Exercise we ask 5 questions to test our unconscious intention:
(1) Does my intention feel believable? (2) Is it strongly felt with no competing feelings or intentions? (3) Does it lead to a deeper sense of enhanced living? (4) Does this intention support my deepest preferences and cherished values? (5) Does this intention have a basic sense of goodness? If the intention fails these tests, either replace it or do a preferred process to change it and try again until you have a strong, positive, and believable intention. These will gradually be integrated into your nature and fall away from your awareness. You will experience their guiding force at the gut level.

Kyle asks: "Is inner resolve something that can strengthened? Isn't inner resolve something people either have or don't?"
Kyle inner resolve, will, or stick-to-itiveness can be strengthened through approaches like the "I Stood It Exercise" or the "Will Building Exercise". Inner resolve can be developed. Inner resolve/will is actually made up of several key ingredients. Outwardly inner resolve/will appears as the faculty of conscious and deliberate action or our power to determine and control actions. When inner/resolve is strong it appears to contain some or all of these ingredients: *A clear conscious choice has been made. *Commitment and stick-to-itiveness are present. The person will not give up on a commitment no matter what mood or emotion they might be facing. *The intention(s) are sharply defined and are competing with a minimum of counter intentions and doubts. The intention is running quietly in the background of awareness. *There is a strong purpose fueling the will. *High frustration tolerance is present. The person can stand anything and is not easily overwhelmed if it's important to them. Their patience is high. *The person likely sees a meaning or value in what's to be done. *The person might also view a well-formed outcome. *The knowledge that someone can choose to take action regardless of how they are feeling. All of the above contribute to a strong inner resolve/will can be increased with training. Let's take a look at how the inner resolve/will can be empowered and trained: *If you desire to have strong intentions you can choose an intention aligned with your deepest unconscious values. The "Intention Drill" can be valuable here. * Conscious choice can be made by weighing the pros and cons of an undertaking and making a commited choice. *Commitment and stick-to-itiveness can be made iron bound by sincerely agreeing to stick to a course of action no matter what comes up. Commitment can be increased by affirming it at the gut level. If any emotion or doubt opposes your commitment you can further strengthen it by processing or integrating that emotion or doubt. *High frustration tolerance can be built by processing and integrating low frustration tolerance thoughts and feelings. Doing the "I stood it exercise" can be helpful here in overcoming low frustration tolerance and impatience. * A person helps themselves by seeing the meaning and value in their undertaking. If you choose to wash dishes you realize they not only look good-- clean plates protect your health. *A well formed outcome can be seen in the "Goal Maker" or by taking the time to see what the end results might look like. This can be motivating for the will. *Someone can learn to take action no matter how they're feeling. This can increase will. "A Call to Action" can assist in overcoming inertia. THE WILL BUILDING EXERCISE Work with the following scenarios to increase your will. Using the previously mentioned Emoclear processes and drills can assist in creating a more powerful will. Will is highly important to our well-being. Sometimes in life when we're buffeted around we have to call on our will to persist in the face of inertia, low frustration tolerance, anxiety, dark moods, and incessant doubts. In some state dependent situations knowing the positive meanings of things or seeing excellent outcomes may be submerged by confusion and overwhelm. Sometimes we might have to gut it or will our way forward before our experience changes. This is the nature of trance and overwhelm. The person who can make a choice and keep on keeping on has a strong advantage in life. Here is a list of items to be practiced to increase the powers of will: *Do something that would call on you to be courageous. Confront something in yourself or in life that will make you face anxiety or fear. (There's no need to do something physically dangerous). *Make a goal--commit to it--carry it out. *Do something that you believe you can't stand, is too much, or is overwhelming. Carry it out until it's done. The "I Stood it Exercise" is a good framework. *Face a self-defeating habit and break it. *Undertake doing something you've not previously done. *Let go of something unrequired in your life. *Put off doing what you feel is important. *Do something quickly you normally do slowly. Do something slowly that you regularly do quickly. *Undertake something right away where you often procrastinate. *Assert yourself where you normally would not. Say no where you regularly say yes. Say yes where you normally say no. *If you must decide something, do it right away. *Do something you normally might find embarrassing. (Don't do this at work). (c) Steve Mensing Have fun ************************************************ I STOOD IT EXERCISE ***Warning: Do not do this exercise if you have a history of mental illness, severe trauma, or panic without a therapist. If you decide to do this process you can only do it if you agree to absolve the webmasters, Emoclear.com, the servers, and Steve Mensing of any responsibility for the application or misapplication of this process. With any emotional process there is always the possibility of experiencing discomfort so proceed with this warning.*** Low Frustration Tolerance can be handled a number of ways: * Feel the LFT fully and get up and do what you better do no matter how you feel at first. This alters the feeling state fairly quickly. Low Frustration tolerance depends on the belief that we can't stand something or it's too much. The belief gets disproved when we clearly demonstrate to ourselves that we can stand something, that it's not too much. LFT is a trance that can't survive in activity. The more you get up and do what you supposedly can't stand, the more LFT loses its power. Action blows it out. Inaction keeps it alive. *LFT can also be a target for clearing. However accept that you have it and it serves a useful function on some level. LFT is often present with compulsions, addictions, panic, and pain syndromes. * Besides direct action, knowing that you can stand anything can help. You might ask yourself can I stand your LFT plagued activity for: (1) A huge cash reward? (2) A valuable chunk of your life is returned to you? (3) Or any other valuable reward you can see. (your life is spared) If you can stand it for any of these rewards then you can assume you can stand it or it's not too much. Here is the "I stood it exercise": I STOOD IT EXERCISE. Find an important situation you deem "too much" or "can't be stood" and simply carry that activity through to its conclusion. With this exercise you will prove to yourself that you "stood it". Feel your I can't stand it feelings fully and then swing all your attention over to your chosen activity. Here are the steps: (1) Name the activity you believed "too much" or "couldn't stand": _____________________. (2)Set a specific length of time for standing it (some may want to stand the activity from start to finish). The length of time is: ____________________. (3) Recognize your long-term rewards for "standing it". My long-term rewards for staying in there will be: _______________________. (Better quality of life--more self control--etc). (4) Recognize that you can stand it for a large sum of money, your life being spared, or whatever you highly value. If you recognize this, you know then that you can stand it. (5) Do the activity named in step (1) from start to finish. (6) Recognize that you stood it--that it wasn't too much. Know that you regained control over an area of your life. Notice the good feelings you obtained by doing this activity from start to finish. Take care, Steve |

Hi,
Another way of finding your intentions is to make an inventory of your daily activities for about 7 days. These are ways of locating your most important intentions. Dave Cohen |
