Hi Bill:
Bill asks: "Can reading novels be therapeutic?" Bill novel reading can be therapeutic in a variety of ways. *In reading well-crafted novels we develop what's known as a ludic trance where we identify with characters thoughts and feelings. In this identification we may bring up our own emotional reactions and core beliefs and values. We may integrate emotions brought on during ludic trance. We may reflect on our own beliefs and values and this may start some changes in our thinking. *Novel reading can have mood elevating effects which can be helpful for persons suffering from mood disorders. Some therapists may even prescribe humorous and uplifting books. *Book characters may model positive character traits (Like stick-to-itiveness, generosity, courage, moral behavior, empathy ect.) Characters may also model values, problem solving, assertive behavior, and reasonable thinking. *Novel reading, because it's absorbing, may help break rumination and worry. This may be helpful for some readers before bedtime and may lead to a sounder sleep. *Novels may demonstrate that folks can survive worse case scenerios or make their way through impressive obstacles. This can be uplifting and give readers hope. *Characters in well-crafted novels will often demonstrate they can change both internally and in behavior. This lets readers know that change is possible. Take care, Steve |
