Hi Richard:
Richard asks: "When did written exposure methods start to appear? What were the first one's like?" Richard written exposure appeared informally whenever folks started journaling about emotionally charged subjects and writing extensively about them. This could've occured back when writing first appeared. In the last 60 years journaling has grown. Written exposure was helped along by James W. Pennebaker, a research psychologist, who studied the impact of emotional writing on traumas back in the mid-80's. Pennebaker has refined and developed emotional exposure methods. His two books on emotionally expressive writing are worthy reads: "Writing to Heal: A Guided Journal for Recovering from Trauma and Emotional Upheaval" and "Opening up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions."
